Whole Roasted Crickets
Entomophagy is the purposeful use of insects for food. Insects are not only very high in protein but this protein is very readily digested by our bodies.
I thought I would try insects for the first time and support an Aussie company at the same time. I am glad I did. In fact, Australia has some of the oldest traditions of eating insects as they are a nutritional bonanza. I might have to try ants next. 🙂
I bought some snack crickets (two different flavours, ‘chili and lime finger’ and ‘chili and garlic’) from the people at ediblebugshop.com.au. They are an insect farm in Sydney, Australia and export their product world wide.
The crickets are roasted to crunchy perfection and have a lovely nutty taste before ending in a spicy zing.
You can use them in all sorts of things like salads, tacos, wraps, stews and casseroles. Straight from the jar is may favourite though.
Give them a try and you won’t regret it.

GoodCritters: Praying Mantis
I have always been fascinated by praying manitses and love seeing them in my garden. I suppose you could also call them BadCritters because they eat GoodCritters if they catch them. However I think they are part of a balanced garden.
Females are larger than the males and are supposedly not good fliers. Both sexes however are masters of ambush. Their large compound eyes, lightning reflexes and rasped front legs make them deadly to their prey, other insects.

I try not to use insecticides so it is important for me to try and let nature balance itself out when possible. Just like the presence of frogs in my garden I think these guys are a sign U am doing something right 🙂
Encouragement:
As usual keep insecticides and pesticides to a minimum.

BadCritters: Aphids
These little plant suckers are often not noticed until their numbers are out of control. Another sign is that are often seen with ants that are “herding” them for the honeydew the aphids secret.
Species:
One of the many in the aphid superfamiy Aphidoidea.
Identification:
Damage:
Aphids suck the goodness out of the plants and this leads to them being in poor health. The honeydew they secrete attracts ants and fungal diseases and the holes they put in the plants can let in viruses.
Control:
I have only had a few infestations that my ladybird friends could not handle. In those cases I have used pyrethrum spray. I wait until my bee friends have gone to sleep though.
You can also use bio-oils or a good spray with the hose pipe will knock them off the plants.
